The quivering lip

The babies have learned a new trick. All three of them can do it. Now when one of the babies cries, their whole lower lip quivers. And sometimes they even squeeze out real tears. This new development just breaks my heart. To see those little sad faces with tears on their cheek and that lip quivering... how will I ever say no to those faces???

My little (BIG) 7 weekers!

Today is 7 weeks since the birth of my little miracle babies. It's hard to believe that 49 days ago these little ones were in my belly and then in just 3 minutes they were here. A lot has changed since then. First, they are much bigger. Today Sarah weighed 7lbs. 10ozs. That means she has grown 3lbs. 15ozs. in just 7 weeks. Today Jake weighed 10lbs. 4ozs. He has gained 5lbs. 10ozs. Today Luke weighed 8lbs. 8ozs. which is 3lbs. 15ozs. more than when he was born. Obviously they are breathing on their own and eating much more than their birth day. Also now they look at us when we talk to them. You can tell they recognize us and know who we are. It's so cool! They are also sleeping longer at night (which is a welcome change) and staying awake more during the day. Currently they are averaging 4-4 1/2 hours between feedings during the night. Sometimes we even get a 5 hour snap. Woohoo! In just 10 short days they will be 2 months old. Oh, and yesterday was my due date- February 23rd. Can you imagine if they'd stayed in my belly that long?!?!

My chunky monkey Jake

Jake is an excellent eater. He has been since he was born. He currently eats 4 1/3 oz. at every meal and could probably eat more. His brother and sister each eat 3 1/3 oz. I could tell he was growing fast because he's almost outgrown newborn diapers. He has cute puffy cheeks and chubby rolls on his legs. Today we went to the doctor's office to ask him about Jake's nasal congestion. Luckily the doc said Jake is fine and he just has baby mucus and congestion. While we were there they weighed him. He is already up to 9lbs 7.5oz. He is definitely our little chunky monkey! I love it!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This weekend was definitely one worth blogging about. It kicked off Friday with at least 3 inches of snow. It snowed pretty much non-stop from 1pm through the night. Of course being a native Georgian, this excites me because we don't get a lot of snow. It was just so beautiful! Unfortunately, the snow was gone as quick as it came. Enjoy the pics of our winter wonderland.

Saturday we drove to Duluth and dropped the babies off at Grandma and Grandpa Trenary's house. They kept the babies while Kurt and I went out to a Valentine's dinner at The Melting Pot. We had a special 5-course meal that included garlic and herb cheddar cheese fondue, strawberry & walnut salad, strawberry sorbet, and white chocolate strawberry fondue for dessert. The main course included lobster tail, filet mignon, ahi tuna, shrimp, parmesan-crusted chicken, and pork tenderloin. So yummy! After dinner we continued our date night at Dave & Busters. As usual, Kurt dominated the racing games and I dominated basketball. We earned over 1000 tickets but decided to bank them as we couldn't find anything big we wanted to spend them on. It was great to have a night out to ourselves but we did miss our little munchkins. Enjoy the pic below of Kurt with his 2 girls- Sarah and our dog Lady. Precious!

On Sunday we just relaxed around the house. My Mom, my brother, Sara and Kurt's folks came to visit. Kurt's mom is spending the week with us to help care for and spend time with the babies. Elizabeth is back at work this week but she's coming back next week to give us more help. I only have a few more weeks until I'm back at work. It's hard to believe when I go back I will have been out for 4 months. That's a third of a year! I have been away so long I am looking forward to returning. But it will be a big adjustment being away from the babies. Good thing Kurt is ready to start his leave from work.

Babies- the first month

Last Saturday the babies were 1 month old. Time seems to be going by so fast. And so much has changed in the last month. A month ago they were these tiny little creatures who could hardly breathe or eat on their own. Now they are strong, vibrant newborns. We are already having to put away all the boys' preemie clothes. Even a few of Sarah's preemie sleepers are snug. They are just growing so fast! Sarah and Luke are taking 3 ounces of breastmilk or formula at every feeding. Jake is our hungry boy and he takes a full 4 ounces at every feeding. We were a little worried the other day when Luke had not pooped in a day and a half. When he was finally able to go, it was a total blowout! It has been a challenge to get organized and figure out a routine but we're learning. Elizabeth has been a huge help at getting organized. Now I just need to pick up a few items at Walmart to finish the job. Having things handy and easy is already making our lives easier. Work smarter, not harder, right? Here are some pics of the babies snuggling in their pack-n-play and their "1 month" pics.

4 Week Check-up

This week my step-mom Elizabeth came to help Kurt and I with the babies. She stayed with us Monday-Friday and helped out so much! She even helped me venture out to the pediatrician with the babies for their 4 week check-up on Wednesday. The babies are doing great! And they continue to attract so much attention when we're out in public. I think it's the giant 6 foot stroller that catches people's eye- lol. Even the nurses gush all over the babies. Sarah is now 5lbs. 12.5ozs. (birth weight was 3lbs. 11ozs.). Jake is now 7lbs. 4ozs. (birth weight was 4lbs. 10ozs.). Luke is now 6lbs. 13.5ozs. (birth weight was 4lbs. 9ozs.). The boys are now wearing "newborn" size diapers and clothes. Only Sarah still needs to wear "preemie" size. The babies are still sleeping most of the day/night. They wake up about every 3-4 hours to eat and have their diapers changed. I'm not sure how much longer that will last. Many people have told me to expect them to start staying awake more. I only hope that's during the day and not at night! Getting 2-3 hour blocks of sleep between feedings is tough enough. Please don't get worse. We'll keep you posted.
